Registration Fields

Can anyone provide a straight forward tutorial on how to add additional registration fields please. I have look through the forum and found several threads but some of these refer to older versions I think because the code is different in my files (latest version)

This really should be part of the software out of the box I think and is a big omission in my opinion.

Anyway, I would really appreciate some help with getting this sorted out. I have followed a thread that gets me half way there ie editing the register-form.php by adding the additional fields. But the second part of the tutorial speaks about editing the register-process.php and this is where I am stuck as my code appears to be different from the explanation. I cannot seem to get the additional fields to show up in the backend or on the profile page?

A good step by step tutorial is required please. There are so many different queries about this that I am sure many others would also appreciate this.
