Auto Update- cancels all costumizations???

If I click on update automatically, it says "Updating this theme will lose any customizations you have made. 'Cancel' to stop, 'OK' to update".???

How do I keep the setting changes?

How do I keep customizations made with child theme?

I've spent a lot of hours doing settings, configuring, adding categories, etc. I DO NOT WANT TO LOSE ALL THAT!

I have not made any changes to the child themes styles.css file or any other file with the editor yet. Maybe that was a good thing.

Please explain in detail, the warning when updating, and exactly what is lost, and how to avoid lossing anything.
