Well, the two biggest advantages from what I understand are:
#1. memcached - which "is a high-performance, distributed memory object caching system, generic in nature, but intended for use in speeding up dynamic web applications by alleviating database load." It's only useful if your host provider has in installed.
#2. Transparent content delivery network (CDN) support which will offload various objects like photos, javascript, css and more onto a selected CDN. I'm trying out SimpleCDN at
http://www.simplecdn.com/
Additionally, this plugin will "minify" css, javascript and more.

And I'm taking a huge leap and moving away from shared hosting and putting everything onto a virtual private server (VPS) so I can control just about anything, and get better performance overall.
A lot of this is new to me so I'm learning as I go.
