How to Edit Existing Language (.mo) file ?

Hello,

I've previously gone in and edited text via the language file steps here:

I now need to make additional edits to the language file.

I did the following:
1. Via FTP, I downloaded vantage-en_US.mo from wp-content/languages/themes
2. I tried to open file with POedit. That does not work - the file will not open.
3. I changed the extension from .mo to .po - the renaming works, but when I tried to open with POedit, it said file can't be opened & that it is not in the right format.

I did some research and it sounds like I need to "decompile” (or reverse) the .mo file into a .po file.

I've seen some instructions on how to do it from the command line, but the instructions seem to be for windows - I am on Mac OSX 10.9.2

How do I "decompile" a .mo file pack to .po file to update changes to language file?

What is the best way to make changes to an .mo file that already has previous edits/changes?
